On the mexican border

Going to the mexican border on the weekend just to look at it didn’t sound at first like my idea of fun. It seems like it would just be a fence and no big deal, right? I guess I was expecting something a bit demure, like a bunch of sticks stuck into the ground. (That is how the Mexican side is.) The American side is a heavy very tall all-metal fence. It looks fortified. Between the Mexican fence and the American fence is the “no man’s land” which you aren’t allowed to go in. I think it’s Federal property as opposed to California property. Anyway, the first picture is the Southwestern-most point in the continental United States. (My dad recently visited the Northwestern most point and I suppose is addicted to this sort of trekking)

There were a few people looking at us, from the Mexican side. Some of them found who they were looking for, waving their phones around and talking with their loved ones through the two fences – a distance of about 6 or 7 meters. Others were probably just visiting, just like us. They stared at us, we stared at them. Awkward.

The third picture shows the American side. It’s a stark contrast to the overflowing mexican side, where you can see hotels, a bull-fighting arena, apartment homes, etc. There was also Mexican music playing the entire time we were there. The Border Patrol was not amused.

The last picture is of birds on the American side, who thankfully are international citizens, and have no problems with migration.

Birds at the edge of America

These pictures were taken with my Samsung Impression.
I’m pretty pleased with it as a phone camera, but it lacks good focusing.
