Pinocchio vs. The Princess and the Frog: Animation
I’ve watched these two movies recently and I noticed a couple differences in animation quality and detail. First of all, Pinocchio (P) was made in 1940 and The Princess and the Frog (F) was made in 2009. So obviously, there’s going to be alot of technical differences. P was made mostly on paper and primitive frame-by-frame drawing. F was made probably on Toon Boon with a mix of Wacom tablets and a bit on paper. I believe backgrounds for both films were painted, probably digitally for F.
Despite this, it appeared to me that human characters had alot less detail in F, and the detail they did have was more subtle. This gave it an overall flat look that I didn’t like. I’d rather the faces have more hard lines than just be flat one-dimensional pieces. P’s characters were more cartoonish, hence more detailed. I also liked the hair better in P (with the exception of the fairy.) I’m not totally in love with the soft glows in F on characters, but it can grow on me. I wish it was situated more based on face structure rather just on the outlines. Also, Tiana’s mom seemed to age REALLY well, but then again this is a children’s movie, so I’m not expecting ‘accuracy’. They obviously wanted to romanticize her parents.

Further, I looked at objects. This was harder to do for F because it was a very character-driven story. P has lots of objects and the animators spent time on each frame with Gepetto’s clocks and music boxes to make them look perfect. Most of the objects in F were inanimate, so they were painted. Look at the roof of the clock and the little doors (moving parts.) You can barely tell a difference. This is very advanced for it’s time. This isn’t consistent throughout P though. There are flaws as the film progresses, but the clocks and music boxes are really magical to me. Especially since there’s so many! They only stay on the screen for 3 seconds at a time. Further down you can see the boat in F. I believe it’s digitally painted and it does move a bit. Once again pretty much flawless integration with the background. I couldn’t find a screenshot but a scene in Mama Odie’s house where she throws something against the wall, it’s very easy to see that the wall is separate from the moving part that’s being through because of the MUCH thicker lines on the animated object. Although – overall, they do very well.

Animal Characters are hard to judge, since each one is often designed and detailed to the extent of it’s importance in the movie. I thought the alligator in F had a fabulous personality but the design was poor and uninspired. Many people said it looks like the Peter Pan Gator. The villainous felines in P have an interesting appeal, although not my favorite anthropomorphic realization. For animals, detail is added through texture by creating irregular outlines (where hair or wrinkles or joints are). Also, look at Figaro’s ear hairs – they look painted on, and probably are. One thing I didn’t like about F is the use of gradients. I like gradients sometimes, but not paired with thick outlines.

This post is just my opinions and immediate observations. I didn’t plan on doing this, but I watched the movies close together and noticed the differences. Anyway, if you read this entire post and feel like you wasted 5 minutes of your life, here’s something to cheer you up:

Tuesdays with Morrie is a simple, easy to read book. I read it twice, and I understood it very differently each time. This is one of my favorite excerpts from the book. It’s a simple story that fits perfectly within the context of the book, but also stands on it’s own.
There is a little wave, bobbing along in the ocean, having a grand old time. He’s enjoying the wind and the fresh air — until he notices the other waves in front of him, crashing against the shore.
“My God, this is terrible,” the wave says. “Look what’s going to happen to me!”
Then along comes another wave. It sees the first wave, looking grim, and it says to him, “Why do you look so sad?”
The first wave answers, “You don’t understand! We’re all going to crash! All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn’t it terrible?”
The second wave says, “No, you don’t understand. You’re not a wave, you’re part of the ocean.”

If you haven’t read Tuesdays with Morrie yet, I recommend it. It’s also great for teens/tweens, since the writing style is simple and easy to understand.

I don’t like making political posts alot, but the healthcare bill just passed, and I was really interested about what’s actually in it. I found a summary here and thought I’d share. Here’s a clean-cut summary of what’s in the final healthcare bill:
Coverage:
- Would expand coverage to 32 million Americans who are currently uninsured.
Health Insurance Exchanges:
- The uninsured and self-employed would be able to purchase insurance through state-based exchanges with subsidies available to individuals and families with income between the 133 percent and 400 percent of poverty level.
- Separate exchanges would be created for small businesses to purchase coverage — effective 2014.
- Funding available to states to establish exchanges within one year of enactment and until January 1, 2015.
Subsidies:
- Individuals and families who make between 100 percent – 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and want to purchase their own health insurance on an exchange are eligible for subsidies. They cannot be eligible for Medicare, Medicaid and cannot be covered by an employer. Eligible buyers receive premium credits and there is a cap for how much they have to contribute to their premiums on a sliding scale.
Federal Poverty Level for family of four is $22,050
Paying for the Plan:
- Medicare Payroll tax on investment income — Starting in 2012, the Medicare Payroll Tax will be expanded to include unearned income. That will be a 3.8 percent tax on investment income for families making more than $250,000 per year ($200,000 for individuals).
- Excise Tax — Beginning in 2018, insurance companies will pay a 40 percent excise tax on so-called “Cadillac” high-end insurance plans worth over $27,500 for families ($10,200 for individuals). Dental and vision plans are exempt and will not be counted in the total cost of a family’s plan.
- Tanning Tax — 10 percent excise tax on indoor tanning services.
Medicare:
- Closes the Medicare prescription drug “donut hole” by 2020. Seniors who hit the donut hole by 2010 will receive a $250 rebate.
- Beginning in 2011, seniors in the gap will receive a 50 percent discount on brand name drugs. The bill also includes $500 billion in Medicare cuts over the next decade.
Medicaid:
- Expands Medicaid to include 133 percent of federal poverty level which is $29,327 for a family of four.
- Requires states to expand Medicaid to include childless adults starting in 2014.
- Federal Government pays 100 percent of costs for covering newly eligible individuals through 2016.
- Illegal immigrants are not eligible for Medicaid.
Insurance Reforms:
- Six months after enactment, insurance companies could no longer denying children coverage based on a preexisting condition.
- Starting in 2014, insurance companies cannot deny coverage to anyone with preexisting conditions.
- Insurance companies must allow children to stay on their parent’s insurance plans through age 26.
Abortion:
- The bill segregates private insurance premium funds from taxpayer funds. Individuals would have to pay for abortion coverage by making two separate payments, private funds would have to be kept in a separate account from federal and taxpayer funds.
- No health care plan would be required to offer abortion coverage. States could pass legislation choosing to opt out of offering abortion coverage through the exchange.
Individual Mandate:
- In 2014, everyone must purchase health insurance or face a $695 annual fine. There are some exceptions for low-income people.
Employer Mandate:
- Technically, there is no employer mandate. Employers with more than 50 employees must provide health insurance or pay a fine of $2000 per worker each year if any worker receives federal subsidies to purchase health insurance. Fines applied to entire number of employees minus some allowances.
Immigration:
- Illegal immigrants will not be allowed to buy health insurance in the exchanges — even if they pay completely with their own money.

On a personal note, this means that I now get my insurance reinstated, as well as my brother, and also Dary has a good chance of getting insurance as well by 2014.

David Tavaré’s Summerlove never gets old for me – and is always on my summer playlist. It’s romantic vacation pop. I’m a sucker for English/Spanish songs. I’m always lipsynching “amor revelando…” Oh, and it’s also way better than the Justin Timberlake song by the same name.
Here‘s the video if youre interested. It’s basically pretty beaches, a chick in a bikini, and David Tavaré in a white suit singing in a fancy resort. I know, deep stuff.

I loved the weather today. It was nice & hot, so we went to the pool. Sadly, not hot enough for the beach. In the evening I hung out in Dana Point and marveled at this misty sight above the harbor. I go there often and rarely see this sort of fog.
This is blurry (poor lighting) but one of my favorite streets in Socal. When I first moved here this is the first sight I saw. You see lots of skateboarders ride on La Cresta in the summer.
Being a pedestrian in Dana Point is serious business.
